What Is an Image Sitemap?

An Image Sitemap is an XML file that lists image URLs and connects them with the web pages where those images appear. It gives search engines extra information about images that may be harder to find through normal page crawling. The file supports image discovery, but it does not guarantee image indexing or visibility.

Key Takeaways About Image Sitemap

  • It focuses on image discovery, not image rankings.
  • It can support images that normal crawling may overlook.
  • It is not the same as an HTML image gallery.

How Image Sitemap Works

An Image Sitemap gives search engines structured image information alongside page URLs. A site can place image details in a separate XML file or within a standard XML sitemap. Crawlers read the file and follow the listed page and image references.

Related glossary terms: Alt Text, Robots.txt, Index Coverage.

The file works with, but does not replace, clear page content, descriptive file names, and useful Alt Text. A normal sitemap mainly identifies pages, while an image sitemap highlights image resources connected to those pages. Technical checks review whether the file loads, follows XML rules, uses accessible URLs, and reflects the images currently shown on the site.

How we use it in Technical SEO

We compare the sitemap entries with important pages and image files. We also check for broken image URLs, removed files, and images that sit outside the listed page content.

Expert Note

When we review an Image Sitemap, we check its file path, XML structure, and image URLs. Our team compares the entries with crawl data and the images shown on key pages. We also remove stale references when a page or image has changed.

Image Sitemap in Practice: A Real-World Example
